What is a database?Last updated: Sep 30, 2025

An academic database is a specialized digital collection of resources like journal articles, research papers, books, and reference materials that are organized, searchable, and accessible.

Databases are often subject or discipline specific. In USMA Library's A-Z database page, you can filter the databases by academic department.

Sources in a database may be a variety of different things:

  1. Journal articles

  2. Books and eBooks:

  3. Movies and videos

  4. Reports or technical information

  5. Newspapers

  6. Historical or government documents

The interactive graphic below explains some of the different types of sources in databases and provides examples of USMA databases that contain that type of information.
