What are some methods I can use to evaluate sources?Last updated: Dec 01, 2025

Multiple methods exist for evaluating sources. Two popular methods are the SIFT Method and lateral reading.

  • The SIFT Method The SIFT method is a four-step process for evaluating online information by first stopping to think before you trust what you see. You then investigate the source's reputation, find better or alternative coverage, and trace claims back to their original context.

  • Lateral Reading Lateral reading is a strategy for evaluating an unfamiliar source by leaving the site and opening new browser tabs. This allows you to quickly find out what other, more trusted sources say about the original site, its author, and its reputation.
